Housing Actions planned across the UK on 8th of July
Residents in Abbey Wood in Bexley are holding a community event on the 8th of July to build the resistance to Peabody’s plans to demolish their estate.
This is one of a number of events happening as part of a national day of action on housing, for community and for climate, on the 8th of July. Campaigners across the UK are organising meetings, rallies and protest actions to highlight the links between the housing crisis and the climate crisis and push for change.
Estate demolition; empty homes; cold damp homes - these are not just issues in the fight for everyone’s right to a decent affordable home - they are also central to our response to the climate crisis. We could quickly reduce emissions from buildings by retrofitting homes with insulation and renewable energy, and by stopping the unnecessary emissions from luxury second homes and empty investment properties.
But instead of focussing on these kind of solutions to the housing and climate crises, we have a government that would rather violently evict squatters who put empty homes to good use, and subsidise developers building luxury apartments that don’t provide the homes we actually need.
Housing Rebellion is starting to bring together people who are resisting the madness of the housing market in many different ways, and challenging the profit-driven agenda of our politicians, to demand that housing should be for Need Not Greed.
