Millbank Tower stands empty but the plans for refurbishment, approved by Westminster Council and the Mayor of London, will lead to ZERO new affordable homes
Out of 207 luxury flats and two floors of 5-star hotel rooms, there will not be one affordable housing flat.
There are more than 100,000 families in England and Wales who have been accepted for council housing but are currently stuck in temporary accommodation.
Another 4.44m people are in overpriced privately-rented homes.
There are over half a million empty homes in buildings like Millbank Tower which could meet this need.
Instead we see the wrong type of housing being created. These kind of luxury flats planned for Millbank Tower are often sold off-plan and left empty, purely as an investment, ignoring surrounding communities crying out for housing.
If this development complied with the Mayor's own MINIMUM standards for housing then 25% of the tower would be affordable housing - that is 141 affordable flats, or a payment in lieu of housing on site of £57 million.
Instead the developers are allocating ZERO flats as affordable and are paying a measly £1.7 million.
Instead of using sustainable building methods or renewable energy the developers are also not even going to hit the minimum environmental standards in the London Plan, and will get out of this obligation with a token payment of £619,000.
To deal with the housing crisis and the climate crisis we must demand better.
